Gum Disease Treatment
When people think about attaining the perfect smile and having optimal dental health, they focus on their teeth. However, the health of your gums is just as important!Gums support your teeth and so the health of your gums is important in maintaining overall oral health, as well as the health of the rest of your body. If your gums exhibit signs of gums disease it’s important to seek treatment as soon as possible. If neglected, gum disease can cause shifting teeth and eventual tooth loss.
Symptoms of Gum Disease
If you notice the following symptoms it is advisable you make an appointment to visit Atrius Dental Studio so we can assess your condition.
How to Prevent Gum Disease
The best way to prevent gum disease is to have an active maintenance routine. This includes brushing your teeth twice a day for approximately 2 minutes, flossing in between every tooth once a day and visiting the dentist regularly. Your regular dental check-up is extremely important as you will receive a professional clean taking away any plaque buildup over this time period. We will also be able to advise you where your technique needs improvement. We also recommend advising us about any health issues that may contribute to the advancement of gum disease such as diabetes. We may wish to provide you with a personalised plan of attack.
Red, swollen gums
Inflammation of the gums
Gums that are sore to touch
An excessive buildup of tartar that you cannot remove with your toothbrush
CEREC Crowns + Bridges
If your teeth are weak, chipped or otherwise damaged, the dentists at Atrius Dental Studio may be able to use a crown or bridge to restore your smile and your dental health.
Porcelain crowns and bridges look completely natural, mimicking the look of your natural teeth to blend in flawlessly; no one else will
ever know you’ve had any dental work done.
What are crowns?
Porcelain crowns (also known as a tooth cap) are long-lasting ceramic restorations that cover a decayed, broken or brittle tooth to
preserve the tooth. The tooth crown is placed over the damaged tooth like a cap or sleeve and can restore the function of your tooth.
Once a tooth is strengthened by a crown, its full function is restored. This means no more painful biting, chewing, or speaking. Your new tooth crown will also aesthetically enhance your smile, as it replaces the outward appearance of your damaged tooth which may have cracks, chips, or discolouration from decay.
Tooth crowns are designed to match the opposing tooth aesthetics and height to ensure no change in your bite.
What is a dental bridge?
If you require treatment for the loss of one or more teeth, we suggest either dental implants or a bridge. A dental bridge can fill a gap of up to four teeth (so long as there are healthy natural teeth adjoining the gap). They replace your missing teeth and look completely natural. A dental bridge is made of porcelain and aims to replace missing teeth in the most natural way.
The dental bridge will be anchored to the healthy teeth on either side of the gap to ensure strength and stability.
White Tooth Fillings
There are many different reasons why you may be experiencing pain or discomfort in your teeth, gums or mouth. This is why it is extremely important for you to book an appointment with our dentists to have a full assessment of your teeth. However, the primary cause of a toothache is generally tooth decay.
Tooth decay occurs when the sugars in food and drink are turned to acids by bacteria in the mouth. These acids make tiny holes in our enamel and burrow further into our teeth. This is why it is so important to keep up your at-home maintenance and come into Atrius Dental Studio for your six-monthly check-up to ensure you are cleaning away the plaque and bacteria that forms on your teeth.
When decay forms it is necessary to receive a filling to stop the spread and to regain the strength of your original tooth. If left, decay can cause further structural problems such as an uneven bite or decay to surrounding teeth.
A filling procedure is simple and effective; we simply remove the decayed area of the tooth with special tools, clean the area and flush out any bacteria, and then fill the hole with a safe, tooth-coloured material made from composite resin. Most cases are considered to be pain-free and there is no real downtime afterwards.
We use the latest technology when restoring your teeth. Our fillings are stronger, more natural in appearance and safer than the original amalgam fillings that contain mercury.
How do I know if I need a filling?
Once you come into Atrius Dental Studio for an appointment, we will be able to assess all of your teeth for possible cavities or signs of decay. We can do this by taking X-rays, as well as using our dental mirror and tools to assess each individual tooth.
While pain is an indicator that you may need a filling, it is just as likely that you will have signs of decay without any discomfort as early stages are not painful. This is why it is important to have your teeth checked regularly.
Root Canal Therapy
What is a Root Canal?
A root canal is performed when the internal pulp of the tooth becomes inflamed or infected. This can cause severe pain and swelling surrounding the tooth because the tooth nerve lies within the root canal inside the tooth. The pulp or nerve may become infected due to tooth decay, a crack, chip, excessive fillings or trauma to the tooth. All of these scenarios allow bacteria to enter the internal pulp causing infection.
In order to salvage the tooth, endodontic treatment otherwise known as root canal therapy can be performed. Root canal therapy removes the internal pulp (including the nerve and infecting bacteria) in order to get rid of the infection.
Signs You May Need Root Canal Therapy
If you are suffering from the following symptoms, call Atrius Dental Studio as soon as possible to organise an appointment:
Sensitivity to hot or cold foods or drinks
A change in colour of the tooth
Inflammation of the gums surrounding the painful tooth
A sore or ulcer on the gum that is recurring
Wisdom Teeth Removal
Wisdom teeth normally erupt between the ages of 18 to 24 years of age. It is common for wisdom teeth to be impacted, meaning there is no space for them to erupt. It is not normally common for wisdom teeth to erupt into the right position, even if space is available.
The reasons for not having this space are:
Our soft diets do not cause wear on our other teeth
It is important to protect our other teeth that have grown in the correct position, so fewer teeth need to be extracted
Why Do I Need All Four Wisdom Teeth Removed?
The impacted tooth causing problems needs to be extracted, but so does its opposing tooth. This is because teeth keep moving until they hit something. So, if only one tooth is extracted then the opposing tooth will keep moving (supraerupts) until it hits the gingiva of the extracted tooth, causing problems.
As it supraerupts, it also increases its surface area, causing more food and bacteria to accumulate around the tooth. Therefore, having the two opposing teeth out at the same time saves the extraction procedure and consequent healing time from having to occur twice.
The difficulty of the extraction procedure determines whether they can be extracted at the surgery or in a hospital. Your dentist can discuss your options with you. It is also important to know the complications associated with the procedure, which will be explained further when you visit Atrius Dental Studio.
The lower jaw has not grown enough to accommodate the wisdom teeth
